KIWIX: AN ANDROID APPLICATION TO DOWNLOAD WIKIPEDIA
Originally, Kiwix is free software developed for GNU/Linux, Windows, Mac OSX and recently Android. Among other things, it allows you to consult documents from the web offline.
But the most interesting thing is that the Kiwix application is available on the Google system and will allow you to store the entire Wikipedia on your phone or tablet.
To take advantage of it now, follow these few instructions:
Download the Kiwix app from the Play Store
[appbox googleplay org.kiwix.kiwixmobile]
- Go to this link to download the ZIM file of your choice. For information, know that English is the most provided language on the encyclopedia and that its file weighs less than 20 GB, enough to store it if you have a large microSD card.
- Transfer it to your memory card (if you have enough free space
- Launch the Kiwix app and with the “Menu” button (to the left of the “Home” button), tap on “Upload File”:
- We select the desired file (I used the demo file rather than Wikipedia for the example):
Here ! You can now use the application’s search engine as if you were on the encyclopedia site and gather as much information as possible, without needing an internet connection.
What did you think of this app? Do you often consult Wikipedia and to look for what information in particular?
